In 1989 a TV drama for teens incorporated dramatic elements into episodes by dealing with real teen social issues, such as friendship, drug use, drinking and driving, homelessness, financial issues, divorce, graduating, college, sibling rivalry, taking responsibilities for one's actions, being bullied, death, and environmental issues - what was the groundbreaking show? Home Improvement? NO; Fresh Prince? NO; A Different World? NO. The landmark show was a Saturday morning strip called Saved by the Bell.
The campy program which ran for four years on NBC featured Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Zack, a charming schemer in the mold of Ferris Bueller. Zack engaged in Bueller-esque, direct-to-camera addresses to the audience as well as occasionally freezing everyone around him, offering plot exposition and amusing side-commentary.Unlike Bueller however, Zack's schemes often backfire and result with worse outcomes.
Zack's best friends since grade school have been Lisa Turtle and next-door neighbor Jessie Spano; Samuel "Screech" Powers has also been tagging along with Zack since they were little. Zack was also constantly pining for Kelly, coming up with new ways to try to win her over in many episodes, often battling for her affections with his on-again off-again best friend A.C. Slater. This rivalry ended as the show decided that Zack and Slater were better suited as good friends, not least because of the close friendship between the actors who played them.
The Saved by the Bell cast, like all young actors, grew up and the show wrapped in 1993 with a primetime episode centering on their high school graduation. The actors went their separate ways with various levels of success.
Gosselaar was able to shake the Zack image for lead roles on NYPD Blue and the current TNT court drama Raising the Bar. Mario Lopez (Slater) gained fame for his swift feet on
Dancing with the Stars; Tiffany Thiessen (Kelly) continued the teen angst on Beverly Hills 90210; and Dustin Diamond (Screech) turned to porn to solve money problems.
Fifteen years after he show's end, late night host Jimmy Fallon has been lobbying for a Saved by the Bell - Class Reunion on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Fallon has been lobbying cast members to join the reunion during appearances on his show.
But Fallon's dream of reuniting the cast of Saved by the Bell may have been trumped by an People magazine. Gosselaar, Lopez, Lark Voorhies (Lisa), Elizabeth Berkley (Jesse) and Thiessen take the latest cover of People magazine for a Saved by the Bell reunion - noticeeably missing is Diamond - maybe he was embarrassed of his 2006 sex tape Screeched, aka Saved by the Smell.
The reunion special covers "The hookups, the meltdowns, the memories: The cast reveals what was really going on... and what they think of each other now."
Fallon may also be disappointed that one former Baysider has made it clear she won't have time for his long-awaited on-air reunion, should it happen. Check out Tiffani Thiessen's hilarious video message to Fallon explaining why she's way too busy to reunite with her former cast mates.
